It was in the wee hours of 30th July that nature wreaked havoc in the Mundkkai – Chooralmala areas situated in the southeast side of Wayanad district in Kerala. The massive landslide swept away two villages leaving barely any constructs and a few human lives in the area.

The moment the news of the havoc reached the world outside, rescue volunteers from various religious organisations and political parties rushed to the spot and started searching for live or dead bodies. As per an estimate, the death toll has crossed 300, and more than 200 are still missing.

The rescue volunteers of SDPI were among the first teams that reached the spot, before the military and government rescue teams. Volunteers from various organisations such as IRW, SYS, SKSSF, DYFI, Youth Congress, Welfare Party, Muslim League, etc., have been restlessly involved in rescue operations that still continue to find anyone alive.

The SDPI volunteers were at the forefront of recovering dead bodies from marshy areas and the rivers flowing kilometers away from the spot and kilometers inside the forests and carrying them on their shoulders to hospitals by walking.

Relief activities are continuing with proper momentum and what needs to be ensured is the rehabilitation of the surviving victims with dignity.
